Live performance by London’s Esser. Presented by GBH, Chocolate Industries and Filter Magazine. “With a knife-sharp sense of style, lyrical wit and bombastic production skills, Esser’s approach to pop songwriting comes from a distinctly British standpoint, flush with undercurrents of ska and dubstep. This is catchy pop music.”

Street wear aficionados Mishka got Trouble and Bass to put together their most recent Keep Watch mix installation, and listeners will easily adhere to the title; it’s hard not to focus on the mixtape. T&B has a penchant for solid, excitable mixes, and this one - which mostly thrives in the grey area between bassline and dubstep - is decent evidence of that. The Mike Tyson punch drums and wile out, wonky bass will keep you up better than a level orange siren. Plus, there’s rarely a period where they let too many bars go by without switching it up. Even though some of the switch ups might be too subtle for some tastes, there’s usually something in there to find to move to. In the end, there’s never enough time anyway for a dance to devolve into an imperceptible crawl before some new impact drops from the speakers to make everyone jump. And their attention to the beat count creates certain level of predictability in Trouble sets which makes keeping rhythm with the beat easy like you knew every song. You know they figured something out when you can tell someone else is spinning without looking up.

Boys Noize Records added to its pile of accolades with the recently released album by Shadow Dancer, Golden Traxe. A standout track off this album was “Drivetime.” It’s syncopated percussion starts off the the pace, before arpeggiated vintage bass rolls pick up the momentum and the resulting charging rhythm breaks through the stratosphere into high dark matter. Up in the ozone, the brain is kept stimulated by counter and harmonic rippled melodies assisted by break downs every minute or so that could even be called choruses. Oscillated madness adds perfect tension just before swinging pops and snares bring it all back safely. It may not be a new sound, but nobody seems to be complaining about throwbacks. We were a little bit late on this one, but couldn’t overlook it. Are they named after the video game? Go grab “Drivetime” or the whole album.

The remixes of “Everyday Hustle” by Boston’s B.Rich seem to be getting all the internet love, but the original deserves it’s time in the spotlight too. Chopped up Rick Ross hooks over buzzsaw bass lines kicked around by a jackin’ beat all pulled together by a strong composition. It’ll keep you amped for sure. The EP dropped last week, so go grab that ish.

Bot’Ox will finally drop a new single on March 23rd, and it is apparently only the first of three scheduled for this year. Here’s the A-side from the upcoming “Arab Drift.” We like the B-side, “Rue de L’arenal,” even more; when the synths drop at about two minutes in, it’s on some Thriller ish. You can preview that on their MySpace page If “Drift” were the soundtrack for the end scene of an 80’s horror flick, “L’arsenal” is the creepy night drive in the opening montage. Some definite French music right here.

Dutty Artz always keeps it interesting. The most recent example? Matt Shadtek’s bassline remix of “Go Round Payola,” featuring Jahdan. This one is decidedly upbeat, full of bass dripping with perseverance. At first, it just sounds like a sped up version of the original, then at :55 the wobbles kick in, and Shadetek keeps it movin’ from there. Download it for free, exclusively from RCRD LBL.

I love how they compare it to T2. Speaking of which, check this video from a couple years ago called “Heartbroken.” Could not get enough of that one…
